Success. It’s a word that inspires hope, stirs ambition, and yet can sometimes feel frustratingly just out of reach.
But what do we truly believe about success? Is it something attainable, or does it remain a distant ideal reserved for others?
John Maxwell, in his classic Today Matters, reminds us of the profound opening line from M. Scott Peck’s The Road Less Traveled:
“Life is difficult.”
Peck continues:
“Most do not fully see this truth that life is difficult. Instead, they moan more or less incessantly about the enormity of their problems, their burdens, and their difficulties—as if life were generally easy, as if life should be easy.”
This perspective sheds light on how people respond to the normal challenges of life. When faced with difficulty, most of us fall into one of three categories:
1. The Bitter These individuals believe life should be easy, and when it’s not, they become angry. They throw in the towel, blaming their circumstances, their upbringing, or their luck. In their eyes, others had unfair advantages—a hand up, better timing, or a wealthy safety net. They give up on their dreams, convinced that success is out of reach.
2. The Apathetic This group has stopped trying altogether. They’ve bought into the lie that success isn’t possible for “regular” people. Their mindset becomes one of mere survival—hedging their bets, doing the bare minimum, and resigning themselves to a monotonous grind. In this process, they die inside a little more each day, losing the spark that once drove them.
3. The Resilient These are the ones who understand that life is difficult but don’t let that deter them. Instead, they embrace challenges as opportunities to grow stronger and more resilient. They lift the weight of adversity, learning from every struggle, knowing it builds the muscles needed to thrive. With a mindset that seeks lessons in hardship and consistency in effort, they find themselves achieving success—both professionally and personally.
What About You?
Take a moment to reflect on how you view difficulty and the possibility of success. Most of us are unaware of the assumptions that shape our choices and responses to life’s challenges—or how these attitudes influence our work, our relationships, and the people we love.
Reflecting on these questions can help you uncover your hidden assumptions.
- Do you see challenges as barriers or stepping-stones?
- How can you lean into difficulties with the intention of growing stronger?
- How can you start extracting lessons from the struggles you face?
The truth is, if we don’t believe success is possible, it is certain it never will be. But when we adopt a mindset of resilience and intentionality, we begin to uncover the path toward a more fulfilling life—one where success isn’t just possible but becomes a reality.
