Today, we celebrate the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day. This holiday honors the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of our nation. We are fortunate to live in a country where we enjoy many freedoms that are rare or unknown in other parts of the world.
But what is freedom, really? What does independence truly mean?
Traditionally, in the spirit of nationalism and patriotism, we think of freedoms such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to bear arms, and the freedom to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
However, on a deeper level, isn’t freedom more about our ability to live as individuals in harmony with ourselves and others? Isn’t it more about taking responsibility for our own lives while contributing to our community and society.
True freedom begins with the individual. When we lose personal freedom in our souls, it affects our families, our society, and our country.
So, how do we assess our own personal freedom?
- Freedom from bias and hatred
- Freedom to control our hearts and minds, despite external circumstances beyond our control
- Freedom to learn and grow
- Freedom to manage our time effectively
- Freedom to care for our health and that of our families
- Freedom from our past damages, hangups, self-centeredness, and pride
- Freedom to genuinely love others in a way that serves and uplifts them
- Freedom to say, “I’m sorry” and make amends
- Freedom to change our life’s course at any moment
- Freedom to worship
- Freedom from the need to argue or always be right
- Freedom to use our wealth in ways that value other human beings
- Freedom from addictions, laziness, or apathy
- Freedom to choose work that inspires us and brings us joy
- Freedom to explore and pursue a purpose-driven life
If we, as citizens, struggle with personal freedom and independence in our being, what does that mean for the future of freedom and independence in our country?
Can our nation truly be free and independent if we do not each pursue freedom in our own heart? Celebrate your personal freedoms with some fireworks today! And then, commit to working on anything that keeps you in a personal prison.
