You Have So Much More In You—Here’s How to Unlock Your Unused Capacity

Most people never come close to using their full capacity.
We get stuck in cycles of busyness, distraction, and reactive leadership.
We check boxes, clear inboxes, hit goals—and still feel like something is missing.

Because something is.

Your next level isn’t about doing more.
It’s about becoming more—by tapping into the capacity you already have but aren’t currently using.

The Truth About Capacity

John Maxwell says, “Most people have no idea how far they can go in life.”

That’s not a knock on ambition—it’s a challenge to our mindset.

In his book No Limits, Maxwell identifies “capacity” as the ability to grow and increase our potential.

But most people don’t reach their full capacity—not because they’re lazy, but because they never stop long enough to assess where they’re leaking capacity.

We spend our energy reacting, rather than designing.
We live on autopilot instead of being intentional.
We maintain the status quo instead of thinking how to multiply our impact.

Ben Hardy and the 10X Principle

In his work with Dan Sullivan, Benjamin Hardy makes a bold claim: 10X is easier than 2X.

Why? Because 10X growth requires a complete reinvention. You have to think from your future self—not your current one.

The 2X path allows you to tinker, stay busy, and stay the same. 10X demands clarity, courage, and letting go of everything that’s no longer aligned with your big goal.

“Your future self is a different person than you are today.”

To operate at your highest level of capacity, you must:

  • Define the future version of yourself you want to grow into—not just what to do, but how you will think, lead, and live.
  • Identify what no longer fits—distractions, expectations, or obligations that belong to a past version of you—and start letting them go.
  • Align with a higher vision of success—one that’s not just impressive, but deeply meaningful. Then commit to building it, one intentional decision at a time.

In Ben’s newest work at Scaling.com (book soon to be released), he talks about the need to reset our frame.

When we’re looking through low-expectation glasses, our floor of performance is very low.

But when we shift our frame of reference to a higher standard, we establish a new floor. And once we do, we can focus on what it takes to achieve that “impossible” goal.

A Quick Story

A senior leader I worked with had hit all the “right” milestones: title, income, and influence.

But something was off. He was exhausted. Uninspired.

He said, “I just don’t feel like I’m doing my best work anymore.”

Through coaching, we uncovered a key truth: he was playing safe.

Relying on his proven systems, his default strengths, and his comfort zone.
He was doing the things that had always worked in the past—on endless repeat.

But his future self?

  • That version was bolder, more focused, more generative.
  • That version didn’t settle for managing for success—he multiplied it.
  • That version led from clear identity, not insecurity.
  • That version had vision, fire, and unapologetic clarity.

We redesigned his goals around that identity.

He started eliminating meetings, delegating more, and creating strategic white space to think and create.

Within 3 months, his energy shifted, his team was more engaged, and he began working on a project that re-lit his fire.

He hadn’t burned out—he’d outgrown the old version of success.

Where Are You Underperforming Your Potential?

Here are a few quick prompts to help you self-assess:

  • What percentage of your day is spent reacting vs. creating?
  • Which of your strengths are being used at full capacity?
  • Where are you tolerating friction that drains your energy?
  • What are you doing regularly that your future self would no longer say yes to?

“If you don’t take the time to expand your thinking, your capacity will stay small.” — John Maxwell

Three Capacity Expanders You Can Use This Week

  1. Identify the Leader You’re Meant to Be.
Write a description of the leader you want to be two years from now.
What are you focused on? What have you let go of?
  2. Audit Your Calendar.
Highlight everything that aligns with your next-level self. Circle what doesn’t.
    Then start eliminating.
  3. Protect Deep Work.
Block 90 minutes this week to work on your business or leadership instead of in it.
Use that time to think, strategize, or dream.
(This sounds simple—but it’s transformative when done.)

Final Thought

The capacity is already inside you.
But you won’t unlock it by staying on autopilot.

Real growth requires intention.
Space. Vision. Courage.

You don’t need to do more.
You need to think bigger—and align more boldly.

Your future self is waiting.
